I thought the reading in the NES textbook was extremely helpful. Even though it was a lot of reading, I thought the information stated in the text is pivotal to know as a student who is pursuing a teaching career. I especially liked how the book broke down each type of essay students will be expected to learn in school. Not only did they go in depth about how to teach these essays, but also new ways to brainstorm and helpful ways that students can use to better grasp the concept of “how-to” write these specific types of papers.
I especially like how on page 93 of the NES textbook (towards the beginning of the assigned reading), the book broke down all the necessities for students to fully understand how to write. They went back to the basics of verbs, nouns and adjectives, all the way down to the structure of sentences. It is important to remember as a teacher that you cannot assume that your students know something. It is better to go over something again to make sure all of your students are on the same page, rather than to assume they know one thing when they actually dont. This was a good reminder for me, that it is ok to be simple and it is always ok to go back to the basics.
As I was perusing the Common Core Standards for ELA I started to look deeper to see how many state standards require what the reading in the book displayed, and it was basically all of them, especially 9-10.2 ccss (Common Core State Standards). Yes, all students need to know punctuation and parts of speech, the basics; however, it was the last half of the reading when the book dove into writing essays. Most of the Common Core State Standards are about essays, and how to cite sources. This is such an important aspect in the education standards of today. I definitely thought there would be more room for creative license in this specific area, but there is not. The majority, if not all of the writing standards, are about essays, not poetry or plays or any other style of writing.
Overall, I really enjoyed the reading assigned with this blog and all the insightful information it displayed. I found this reading from the textbook to be the most helpful and enjoyable so far.
