What's your familiarity with graphic novels? Why/how might graphic novels be useful for the secondary English language arts classroom?
I actually just read a graphic novel yesterday. I have recently been exploring and expanding my range of literature. As for the graphic novel I read yesterday, that was assigned reading material for my World Literature class. I used to read graphic novels as a kid all the time. I think graphic novels are very underrated for how helpful they really are. They are especially helpful for students who are not interested in reading a typical novel. Graphic novels are entertaining and also have an illustrated element that help intrigue readers. It is appealing, like comic books. My boyfriend reads comic books all the time, he will sit down and read an entire comic, but he has been reading the hobbit for the last year. He has no motivation to read the Hobbit, even though he could easily sit down and read it in a day.
I think graphic novels can be very useful in educational environments, especially in secondary education classrooms. They are just another tool for teachers to keep in their belts. Graphic novels are just another form of literature that is more approachable to an audience of all ages. They can be useful in a variety of ways, whether its assigning students to read the graphic novel on their own, or to have a student create their own graphic novel (or portion of) after reading one, or even reading one together as a whole class the options are endless. Graphic novels are a gateway to reading full novels, they encourage you to read, are more complex than a picture book, but still have lengthy and challenging content. Overall, graphic novels are an approachable piece of literature and can be especially helpful in a secondary education English Language Arts class by providing an opportunity to read something enjoyable for students who (do or do not) struggle with reading, have short attention spans, get board easily, or just don’t like to read.
As a future secondary education ELA teacher, I will definitely be keeping the tool of graphic novels in my tool belt. Graphic novels are an underrated tool that should be used in all English classes (especially Middle School and High School).
